The art of going nowhere

A good view, a place to sit, and an afternoon with a little space left in it.

A mountain landscape reflected in a quiet lake.

We had brought a map, a notebook, and more plans than the afternoon needed. The lake was still. The hillside was quiet. We put the map away.

An unscheduled stop

At first, staying still felt like a pause before the next activity. We checked the path ahead, talked about the way back, and wondered how long we ought to sit. Then the conversation drifted, and sitting became the activity.

The view changed without asking us to go anywhere. Mist moved over the far side of the water. The colour of the hillside softened. A ripple reached the shore and disappeared.

Leave something unfilled

An afternoon does not have to be packed to feel well spent. Sometimes the part you remember is the empty space between two plans: a bench, an unhurried cup of tea, a few minutes beside the water.

We opened the notebook before leaving. There was very little to write down. A place. A colour. A good feeling. It seemed like enough.

Leave a little space in the day. Something good might find it.

A small thing to try

Leave fifteen minutes unplanned this week. Find somewhere comfortable, put your phone away, and see what fills the space.
